
Featured on the 100 dirham banknote, the first skyscraper in Dubai has been finished in 1979 and soon became the popular landmark of the city.
At the time of the construction it was the highest building in the city, and the first such building along the new along Sheikh Zayed Road.
The 39-story office tower stands 149 metres (489 feet) tall and houses offices of many international corporations, like Sony, MasterCard International, Federal Express, General Motors,
U.S. law firms and several foreign consulates, including Italy, Japan, Switzerland, and the United States of America.
Gradually the new constructions were added forming Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre. eight exhibition halls and some residential apartments.
The complex includes also of Novotel World Trade Centre 17-stores hotel and Ibis hotel.
The DWTC also manages Dubai Airport Expo Centre, adjacent to the international airport, and introduces the new inwestments aimed to enlarge existing Trade Centre near roundabout area.
The developments plans, that include convention centre, shopping mall and luxury hotels were recently postponed due to worldwide recession, at least to late 2011.
